St. Petersburg Neighborhoods
We know St. Petersburg intimately. At every level, neighborhoods, communities and developments, we have experience in and a deep understanding of everywhere in St. Petersburg. Below are basic descriptions of some of our favorites:
Downtown St. Petersburg
The cosmopolitan and urban core of St. Petersburg, downtown is a vibrant area that is also recognized as a U.S. Historic District. This blend of history and modernity permeates the neighborhood and is reflected in its variety of architectural styles, ranging from Mediterranean Revival to Art Deco to Modern. Downtown St. Petersburg encompasses the business district, many government buildings (including City Hall), museums and art galleries, a wide array of restaurants, retail shops, hotels, entertainment venues (such as the historic Coliseum Ballroom and the distinctive Pier), and miles of waterfront parks.
Bahama Shores
Known as the setting for the 1985 movie Cocoon, Bahama Shores is an idyllic community situated on the scenic Tampa Bay waterfront in southern St. Petersburg. Located only 10 minutes from downtown, this fairly affluent neighborhood boasts large homes, spacious tree-lined streets, and a diverse range of residents, from young professionals to families to retirees.
Driftwood
Full of untamed wildlife and quirky charm, the tiny Driftwood neighborhood hides unique homes and narrow, winding streets within a dense growth of abundant oak trees and wild vegetation. Historic, beautiful, and whimsical, Driftwood is home to night herons as well as artists, professors, and other independent-minded people. Many residents live in houses designed by a local artist in the 1930s, which rarely go on the market. Located in southeast St. Petersburg on the Big Bayou, Driftwood inhabitants embrace its natural beauty and close-knit, yet individualistic and bohemian, community.
Placido Bayou
Once an untouched wildlife haven, Placido Bayou, named from the Italian word for “tranquil,” is now a gated waterfront community primarily inhabited by affluent young families. Residents cherish the security, privacy, and well-kept lawns of this quiet, controlled neighborhood, as well as the private schools, low crime rate, and upscale dining and shopping available in northeast St. Petersburg.
North Shore
Located in the heart of the Old Northeast region of St. Petersburg, North Shore is a suburban haven where shady oak trees line brick streets, evoking a sense of 1950s-era tradition. While residences range from lower-income apartments to conventional houses and sizable mansions, North Shore is known for having some of the most expensive real estate in St. Petersburg. The community enjoys significant economic, social, and political influence, with residents rarely finding reason to leave the close-knit, traditional neighborhood.
Lakewood
One of the most multicultural and racially integrated neighborhoods in St. Petersburg, Lakewood offers a variety of single-family properties, from rambling ranch houses to sizable Mediterranean-style homes. With an 18-hole golf course, nature park, library, and the St. Petersburg Country Club, Lakewood maintains a tranquil atmosphere reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s.
Harshaw
Originally a semi-rural community, Harshaw is now a central St. Petersburg neighborhood where concrete-block houses give 1950s-style subdivisions a lasting appeal, despite a sense of uniformity. Quiet and conveniently located near shopping centers and churches, Harshaw is a middle-class haven for residents of all ages.
Gateway
Situated on the far north side of St. Petersburg, the Gateway neighborhood is known for its convenience, which keeps many long-time residents from leaving. With a thriving shopping center, active business district, and a mix of expansive apartment complexes and single-family homes, Gateway is a constantly developing community.
Campbell Park
Nestled in the shadow of Tropicana Field, Campbell Park is a closely-knit, predominantly African American community. While many of the frame and concrete-block homes are somewhat dated, the neighborhood revolves around the 22-acre Campbell Park itself, which serves as a recreational area and the backdrop for festivals and reunions.
Azalea
Quiet, comfortable, and settled, the Azalea neighborhood retains its charm in northwest St. Petersburg. Huge old trees and Spanish moss shade the central park and yards of Azalea, where a strong sense of community and character pervades the houses and population.
Snell Isle
Known for its opulence and exquisite waterfront views, Snell Isle is a prestigious residential neighborhood featuring elegant Mediterranean Revival homes and lush landscaping. Developed in the 1920s by C. Perry Snell, this affluent area is home to the historic Vinoy Golf Club and is prized for its tranquil atmosphere, luxury amenities, and proximity to downtown St. Petersburg. Residents enjoy a close-knit community with access to parks, recreational facilities, and scenic waterfront trails.
Shore Acres
A family-friendly neighborhood known for its winding canals and picturesque water views, Shore Acres is a residential haven offering a mix of charming mid-century homes and modern waterfront estates. Located on a peninsula just northeast of downtown St. Petersburg, the community is popular for its neighborhood parks, community pool, and active civic association, which hosts events and activities throughout the year. Shore Acres is well-loved for its welcoming atmosphere and beautiful natural surroundings.
Old Southeast
A hidden gem of St. Petersburg, Old Southeast is an eclectic neighborhood known for its historic bungalows, artistic vibe, and vibrant community spirit. Nestled along Tampa Bay, it features stunning waterfront parks like Lassing Park, where residents enjoy kite flying, picnics, and breathtaking sunsets. The area’s laid-back charm attracts a diverse population, including artists, young professionals, and families, who appreciate its mix of old Florida charm and urban accessibility.
Maximo
Located in the southernmost part of St. Petersburg, Maximo is a waterfront neighborhood offering easy access to the Gulf of Mexico through its marina and boat docks. Known for its recreational opportunities, Maximo Park is a highlight with its disc golf course, nature trails, and playgrounds. The neighborhood features a blend of single-family homes, condos, and apartments, making it an appealing choice for those who enjoy an active lifestyle and the convenience of nearby shopping and dining options.
